It's a misconception that you must flick the nose with your heel. In many cases, the front foot leaves the board before reaching the nose.
Because a Varial Kickflip is often flicked off the nose with the toe, many people assume that a Varial Heelflip should be flicked off the nose with the heel. In reality, however, the front foot often leaves the board before it ever reaches the nose. In many cases, the front foot scoops off near the end of the concave instead.

What to Do
It doesn't matter which part of your foot you use to scoop. What matters is the direction of the flick.
