Riding up the ramp creates a force that makes your body want to fall forward. The key is how you deal with this force.

In a Smith grind, you need to keep your body on the bottom side of the ramp. But if you simply ride up the ramp without thinking about it, a force will push your body toward the outside of the ramp. Sure, straightening your body and getting on top of the coping may feel more stable, but if you do that, you'll never be able to get into the Smith grind position.
