On top of the inherent characteristics of a Smith grind, your posture can also cause the grind to come to a stop.

In a frontside Smith grind, many parts of the board naturally come into contact with the ramp, and the wheels also sit against the ramp at an angle. This tends to slow the board down through the same principle as slowing down with a powerslide. On top of that, if your body falls forward, the wheels on the toe side of your front foot will make contact with the ramp, creating a major source of friction that can bring you to a stop.
