To clear a big gap, catch the board at the peak of your trajectory and stabilize your body.

To clear a big gap, you obviously need enough distance to reach the landing. However, the most important moment happens much earlier—at the peak of your trajectory. If you can catch the board there and your body feels stable, you can simply continue into your landing. On the other hand, if you feel off balance or uncertain, you should immediately kick the board away, move it out from beneath you, and land safely on both feet.
