A Safe Practice Method
Mechanism / Why It Happens
Practice only the motion of flipping the board while stepping off
You can practice the entire heelflip motion at once, but it’s recommended to first get used to the feeling of flicking the board. Pop the tail while keeping your front foot relaxed. Let the rising nose push back against your front foot, pull your foot in sufficiently, and then flick it. In a heelflip, the more tension there is in your front foot, the harder it becomes to pull it in. To keep your front foot relaxed, the most important thing is to realize how little force is actually needed to flick the board. Practice with the goal of finding the minimum amount of force required to flick the board.

What to Do
Apply downward force to the board, but your front foot still rises relative to the ground
