Approaching at a speed that brings you to a complete stop when you rock is essentially the same as intentionally hooking your front truck onto the coping.
Many beginners hesitate to push the front truck over the coping, so they approach the ramp much too slowly. The problem is that if your speed drops to zero the moment you rock, it's mechanically the same as throwing the skateboard downward from above and intentionally hooking the front truck onto the coping. In the next instant, both your body and the board want to move downward, but the board is blocked by the coping. Your body continues to fall while the board stays behind, causing you to slam. This is why an approach that's too slow makes the board hang up during a Rock to Fakie.
What to Do
A moderate amount of speed actually makes hang-ups less likely and the trick safer.
